Deadly courthouse shooting...Trump: "Law and order candidate"...Professor porn sentencing

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) — Three people are dead following a shooting at a courthouse in southwestern Michigan. A sheriff in St. Joseph says two bailiffs were shot and killed in the Berrien County Court House before officers killed the gunman. A deputy was also wounded. It's not clear what sparked the violence. St. Joseph is near Michigan's border with Indiana and about 100 miles northeast of Chicago.

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas police Chief David Brown has defended the decision to use an explosives-laden robot to kill the gunman who shot five police officers last week. Brown says the shooter threatened to take out even more officers. Brown says his department remains committed to community policing. He said the department is a model for others and has seen dramatic drops in crime and complaints against officers.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — In his first speech since last week's deadly assault on Dallas police officers, Donald Trump has billed himself as the "law and order candidate." Speaking in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Trump called for an end in hostilities toward police. But he also referred to the two shootings by police last week that have sparked outrage after the release of videos. He said more "must be done to ensure every American feels that their safety is protected."

DETROIT (AP) — A white Detroit police detective who called the Black Lives Matter movement "racists" and "terrorists" has been demoted. The remarks were posted on Facebook last week and also used a crude word to describe the group as excrement. Nate Weekley was demoted to the rank of officer. He's also the brother of a Detroit officer who was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the accidental shooting of a 7-year-old black girl during a 2010 raid.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A Dartmouth College professor has been sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison after being caught with an extensive collection of child pornography. Prosecutors say J. Martin Favor shared some of the material on the social media site Tumblr. Favor pleaded guilty in March and resigned earlier this month. He could have received up to 10 years in prison.
