MADRID (AP) — President Barack Obama is urging respect and restraint from Americans angered by the killing of black men by police, saying anything less does a "disservice to the cause" of ridding the criminal justice system of racial bias. He's also urging law enforcement to treat seriously complaints that they are heavy-handed and intolerant, particularly toward minorities. The president says he'd like all sides "to listen to each other,"

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The National Bar Association is offering legal assistance to people arrested during weekend protests over the police shooting of a black man in Louisiana. More than 130 were taken into custody over the past two days. Meanwhile, Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson has been freed on bond after being charged with obstructing a highway in connection with a protest in Baton Rouge.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Confederate flag has made a temporary return to the front lawn of the South Carolina Statehouse. About 200 people attended a rally at the complex in Columbia today organized by the South Carolina Secessionist Party. The event marks one year since the battle battle flag was sent to a museum. Using a portable base, the party raised the flag on the same spot where it flew beside the Confederate Soldiers Monument.

MOSCOW (AP) — An American pastor who supports LGBT rights is being detained in Russia and ordered to leave the country. His lawyer tells the Tass state news agency that a city court ruled that 72-year-old pastor Jim Mulcahy of the Metropolitan Community Church had violated the terms of his tourist visa by engaging in religious activities. According to the lawyer, Mulcahy has been fined the equivalent of $30 and given five days to leave Russia.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It's a good time for animated animals at the box office. "The Secret Life of Pets" follows "Zootopia" and "Finding Dory" as the latest success this year, opening to a massive $103.2 million according to studio estimates. "Pets" unseated "Finding Dory" from its three-week run in first place. The little blue fish actually fell to third place with $20.4 million, behind "The Legend of Tarzan" which took in $20.6 million.
