FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton says he doesn't think a police officer would have shot and killed a driver who apparently was pulled over for a broken taillight if the driver had been white instead of black. Dayton told reporters today that he thinks the police response was "way over" what was called for when the officer shot Philando Castile several times as he sat in his car last night in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights. Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, broadcast the aftermath of the shooting from inside the car on Facebook.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) — A law enforcement expert says the Twin Cities police officer who fatally shot a black man should have delivered first aid when it was clear he was no longer a threat. William Moulder is a police consultant and longtime former police chief in Des Moines. Moulder says the officer should have rendered aid to Philando Castile within a minute or two because it was clear there was no threat.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania judge has denied Bill Cosby's effort to make the accuser in his criminal sex assault case testify before trial. The judge made the ruling today, saying Cosby shouldn't get a new preliminary hearing. Cosby's legal team wanted the chance to cross-examine Andrea Constand before Cosby goes to trial. Prosecutors instead used her police statement at a May preliminary hearing that upheld the charges.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have given up an early gain to finish the day more or less where they started. Energy companies took some losses as the price of crude oil dropped sharply. The Dow Jones finished 22 points lower. The S&P fell a point. The Nasdaq rose 17 points.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio college student who is awaiting trial on a charge he tried to rush the stage at a Donald Trump rally is not being permitted to go to Cleveland for the Republican National Convention. A judge today made that decision, a day after she found that 22-year-old Thomas DiMassimo violated conditions she set in March allowing him to remain free. He has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegally entering a restricted area.
