Obama defends Clinton...Trump blames "rigged" system...Student killed in Bangladesh remembered

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama has defended Hillary Clinton against negative public perceptions in his first campaign stop with the likely Democratic presidential nominee. The president suggested the negative impressions of Clinton are a result of her many years in the political spotlight. He said sometimes people take for granted "somebody who's been in the trenches and fought the good fight and been steady."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says it's "no accident" that the FBI announced it would not recommend charging Hillary Clinton on the same day that President Obama campaigned with her for the first time. Trump released a lengthy statement casting the joint appearance as an example of a "rigged" political system. The Republican candidate went even further at a rally in North Carolina, alleging that Clinton bribed Attorney General Loretta Lynch to avoid charges. The comment came after a New York Times report that said Clinton would consider keeping Lynch if she's elected president.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — A University of California, Berkeley sophomore who was among the 20 hostages killed over the weekend by militants in Bangladesh is being remembered as a kind and smart young woman. Hundreds of friends, professors and students held a vigil tonight at UC Berkeley in memory of Tarishi Jain. She was a sophomore who was in the capital of Dhaka (DAH'-kah) for a summer internship.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police say a man who was attacked in a series of weekend incidents targeting the homeless suffered extensive trauma to his upper torso and died before his body was set on fire. Police say the man is a 53-year-old from Pennsylvania. They're searching for a person of interest connected to two killings and a stabbing.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is paying almost $2.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by eight unidentified women who say the school created a "hostile sexual environment" through a policy of indifference toward assaults by athletes. The payment will be split equally between Tennessee's athletic department and the school's central administration. Lawyers representing the school said no taxpayer dollars, student fees or donor funds will be used to fund the settlement.
