BAGHDAD (AP) — The White House is condemning today's bombings in Baghdad that claimed at least 120 lives. In a statement, National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said, "These attacks only strengthen our resolve to support Iraqi security forces." Most of the deaths occurred in downtown Baghdad, where 115 people are reported to have died.
BEIRUT (AP) — The Islamic State group says it's repelled an advance by U.S.-backed forces on one of its main bastions in northern Syria, seizing back territory it had previously lost. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the IS counteroffensive.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan says a U.S. Senate delegation has paid a rare visit to a tribal region along the Afghanistan border. The area has long been considered a stronghold of al-Qaida, the Taliban and other insurgent groups. The Foreign Office says the delegation led by Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, visited the North Waziristan (vah-ZEER'-ih-stahn) tribal region today.
NEW YORK (AP) — Family and friends gathered at a private service in New York City for Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel (EL'-ee vee-ZEHL'), who died at age 87. Among the mourners was Abraham Foxman, former national director of the Anti-Defamation League, who said Wiesel stood up for all wronged peoples, not just the Jews.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Hundreds of passengers have been stranded at Barcelona's airport because of major delays and cancellations involving Spanish airline Vueling (VYOO'-ling). Problems started Friday. Delays of up to 20 hours provoked a domino-effect that kept rippling through Sunday at El Prat airport, with scenes of stranded travelers seeking answers.
