DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladeshi authorities say six militants have been killed and one captured to end a 10-hour standoff at a Dhaka restaurant that left 20 hostages dead. Officials say 13 captives were rescued when forces stormed the restaurant. Two policemen were killed in the initial militant attack claimed by the Islamic State group.
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — A mob predominantly Buddhist Myanmar has burned down a mosque in the northern part of the country. It's the second such attack in just over a week. The state-owned Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reports security forces in were unable to control the attackers. It said the attack came after mosque authorities failed to meet a deadline to tear down the structure to make way for a bridge.
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A gunman in Serbia killed five people, including his wife, and injured at least 20 others early today when he opened fire with an automatic weapon in a crowded cafe. Police say the suspect was arrested. Witnesses told Serbia's state TV that the attacker came to the packed cafe and saw his wife there with a group of friends. He then went home and came back with a gun.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Military spouses who need professional licenses to work now have it easier in all 50 states thanks to a White House campaign by first lady Michelle Obama Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, that began in 2011. Michelle Obama said just three states accepted licenses from other states when the initiative was first launched. Military spouses seek new employment every one to three years, on average, and more often than civilians.
FORESTHILL, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire in Northern California in the Sierra foothills has forced more than 1,600 residents to evacuate while a new blaze in the central part of the state is burning toward a town of about 5,000 people. Kern County fire officials say the new blaze broke out yesterday afternoon grew to 500 acres near Bear Valley Springs.
