Officer killed in Bangladesh shootout...Lynch regrets meeting with Clinton...Democrats release platform

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A police officer has died after an exchange of gunfire between authorities and a group of gunmen who attacked a restaurant in the capital of Bangladesh. Word of the officer's death comes from his nephew. It hadn't been reported by authorities. Authorities say dozens of hostages are being held in the restaurant, which is popular with foreigners.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Loretta Lynch says she regrets sitting down with Bill Clinton for an impromptu chat earlier this week, even as his wife is under federal criminal investigation. Lynch says she "certainly wouldn't do it again" because it might make the public question the handling of a case that is bound to influence the presidential campaign. But Lynch added that she will follow the recommendations of career prosecutors on whether to file criminal charges at the end of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are releasing the draft of their party's platform, calling it the "most progressive" potential platform in the party's history. The platform is a statement of the party's values. Highlights include saying that American workers should earn at least $15 an hour, the death penalty should be abolished and that no bank can be too big to fail. It was developed by representatives of the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and the Democratic National Committee.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is among those being considered by Donald Trump as a potential running mate. A spokesman for Pence says the Republican governor will meet with Trump over the weekend. People who are familiar with the vetting process had earlier said Trump is considering Newt Gingrich, Chris Christie and Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Officials say four children in Memphis have been fatally stabbed and their mother has been taken into custody. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says the stabbings occurred at an apartment complex today.
