Among the top in the nation... And that's not a good thing

Can you believe that Utah has the third-highest average in the country for regular unleaded gas?

Alaska is at the top of the list of highest gas prices in the country. Then Hawaii, and then Utah, which is actually tied with Wyoming. Utah's average of $3.79 is without state taxes, which the Deseret News figured gives a better basis of comparison among the 50 states.

But think about this, our "regular unleaded" is 85 octane, which presumably is cheaper than 87 octane that's called "regular" everywhere else. If you actually compare 87 octane prices, Utah's average is $4.00 a gallon, minus state taxes.

One of the reasons Utah, and just about every other western state, is in the top ten list is because of transportation costs. Gas has to be moved by land, and there's not much of a pipe network in these parts.
