RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia's execution Saturday of 47 prisoners, including an influential Shiite cleric, is threatening to further damage Sunni-Shiite relations. Shiite leaders in Iran and other nations in the region are condemning Riyadh and warning of sectarian backlash. In Tehran, a large crowd protested at the Saudi embassy and caused some damage to the building.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania coroner says the body of a missing 5-year-old boy with autism has been found in a canal. Jayliel Vega Batista had wandered away from a New Year's Eve party. His body was found about a quarter mile away. The Lehigh County coroner says an autopsy Monday will help determine when the boy entered the water at Canal Park in Allentown.
UNDATED (AP) — Officials say the search at a northern Oklahoma lake for an Arkansas musician has been suspended because of darkness. Craig Strickland, the lead singer of the country-rock band Backroad Anthem, disappeared during severe storms last Sunday while on a duck hunting trip with friend Chase Morland, whose body was recovered from Kaw Lake on Monday.
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) — Former students who claim they were sexually abused at a prestigious Rhode Island boarding school in the 1970s and '80s are calling for an independent investigation. The St. George's School issued a report acknowledging the accusations, but the Providence Journal reports that lawyers for some of the students call the report a "sanitized version of the truth."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Organizers of Philadelphia's annual New Year's Day parade are condemning expressions of hate, a day after some Mummers Parade participants mocked Caitlyn Jenner, were accused of harassing gays and painted their faces brown to portray Mexicans. Officials with the 116-year-old Mummers Parade pledge to cooperate with authorities looking into any complaints.
