TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A massive manhunt is under way in Israel for a man who opened fire at a popular bar in Tel Aviv, killing two people and wounding at least three others. A TV station has video of the shooting, obtained from a shop near the bar. It shows the man walking toward the entrance of the store and taking a gun out of his backpack. He then steps outside and starts shooting, after which he runs away. The station says the man used an assault rifle and fired about 30 shots. Police don't know of a motive for the attack, on a busy main street.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The government in Dubai says efforts to cool down the scene of last night's massive fire in a luxury hotel continue today. Flames engulfed the 63-story hotel even as crowds gathered for the annual New Year's Eve fireworks display around a nearby skyscraper, the tallest in the world. Fourteen minor injuries are reported during the evacuation of the hotel. Small fires can still be seen burning through some windows, sending smoke into the air.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban say they're responsible for the explosion that struck the Afghan capital today, wounding three people. The group says one of its suicide bombers carried out the attack in a central residential area of the city. It's not clear what the target was.
ST. MARY, Mo. (AP) — Sandbagging efforts are underway in the tiny town of St. Mary, Missouri, after the breach of a Mississippi River levee. The small levee about 40 miles south of St. Louis broke last night. The river is expected to crest in the area tomorrow, about 3 ½ feet below the record set in 1993. The levee break mostly affects farmland, but water is approaching St. Mary, a town of about 360 residents.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Laws taking effect in the new year illustrate how states are diverging on some hot-button issues. Texas now allows licensed owners to carry handguns openly in public places, while California allows people to ask a judge to have weapons taken away from relatives who are believed to pose a threat. California and Oregon become the first states that automatically register eligible voters who obtain or renew a driver's license. North Carolina joins the list of states requiring that photo IDs be presented at polling places.
