WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal law enforcement official tells The AP that authorities had an open investigation into one of the two gunmen killed in a weekend shootout outside a contest featuring caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Elton Simpson had previously been convicted of lying to the FBI. He and a second man were killed by officers in Garland, Texas, a Dallas suburb. The group Islamic State is claiming responsibility, but that's doubted by counterterrorism experts.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Members of Congress and Baltimore community leaders have met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss improving the police department. The meeting comes on Lynch's second week on the job and after last week's outbreak of unrest over the death of a man who suffered a fatal injury while in police custody. Lynch said relations must be mended. She also met privately with Gray's family.

ATLANTA (AP) — A prosecutor says statements a suburban Atlanta sheriff made during a 911 call about a weekend shooting didn't match what police found at the scene where a woman was wounded. Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill called to report that that a friend who is a real estate agent was accidentally wounded in a model home on Sunday. The wounded woman's father says Hill and his daughter are friends.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan voters have overwhelmingly rejected tax increases that would have pumped $1.2 billion more a year into roads. That's the word from Gov. Rick Snyder. He and others had called for a 1-cent sales tax hike to improve Michigan's infrastructure. The measure was placed on the ballot by the Republican-led Legislature and had support from Democrats, business and labor.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The maker of a drone large enough to carry tanks of fertilizers and pesticides says the government has approved its use on farms. Yamaha says the drone, which weighs 207 pounds and looks like a small helicopter, is already used to take photos to help farmers identify unhealthy patches of crops.
