Severe weather kills 1 in Illinois, moves east...Kidnap victim safe after deadly ordeal...Airport breaches

FAIRDALE, Ill. (AP) — One person is dead and officials are searching through the rubble of Fairdale, Illinois, in the northern part of the state after supercell thunderstorms produced a large tornado Thursday. Every home in the town of 200 was affected and 15-20 were destroyed. Forecasters say the severe weather is tracking and could affect an area today from Texas through much of the Atlantic coast.

UNDATED (AP) — Police say an alleged kidnap victim is safe after an apparent domestic incident that began in Maryland and spread into Washington D.C., killing a guard at the U.S. Census Bureau in the process. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the guard in Suitland, Maryland, was shot when he approached a car that matched the description of a kidnap vehicle. He died later at a hospital. A chase and shootout ensued, wounding the gunman and an officer.

UNDATED (AP) — The past 10 years have seen more than 250 breaches of airport perimeters at facilities that together handle three-quarters of U.S. commercial passenger traffic. An Associated Press investigation also finds that two airports among the 31 that AP surveyed didn't have data for all years. Most of the incidents involved intruders who wanted to take a shortcut, were lost, disoriented, drunk or mentally unstable.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The fired director of the Ohio State University marching band wants his job back and there's a federal court hearing today. The school will ask that a judge dismiss Jonathan Waters' complaint. Waters accuses the university, President Michael Drake and a provost of discriminating against him by disciplining him differently than a female employee and denying him due process.

UNDATED (AP) — What time is it? For some folks from Beijing to Paris to San Francisco, it's Apple Watch time. Customers were invited to try them on in stores and order them online. Analysts are waiting to see how well the watch will sell beyond devoted Apple fans. Watch prices start at $349, but can go as high as $17,000.
