WASHINGTON (AP) — A top aide to President Barack Obama says the White House's classified computer systems are secure while acknowledging vulnerabilities in its unclassified system. The comments come in response to a CNN report that Russian hackers got access to sensitive White House information such as the president's private schedule. The White House says suspicious activity was detected in October on its unclassified network.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who announced he's running for president, says somebody is worried about him. An outside group not affiliated with any candidate plans to spend more than $1 million on ads criticizing Paul's position favoring talks with Iran instead of another Mideast war. Meanwhile, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz says Paul's policies are "way outside the mainstream."

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A white South Carolina police officer has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a black motorist after a traffic stop. North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said at a news conference that city Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager was arrested and charged today after law enforcement officials saw a video of the shooting following a Saturday traffic stop. Taken by a witness using a cellphone, it shows 50-year-olld Walter Lamar Scott being shot in the back from a distance.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A glitch at a suburban Washington electrical station is blamed for power outages across the nation's capital today. Affected sites included the White House, the Capitol, State Department, museums and train stations. Generators at some of the sites restored lights with backup power. The outages were caused by a mechanical failure at a transfer station some 35 miles southeast of Washington in Charles County, Maryland,

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Humorist Stan Freberg has died. His wife says Freberg died today at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center. He was 88. Freberg is credited with 70 years of work that encompassed radio, television, comedy albums, advertising jingles and nightclub performances.
