His first minute-long ad posted on YouTube focuses on his services as criminal defense lawyer and hints at Shurtleff's own ongoing legal case. The 57-year-old Republican has denied wrongdoing.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lawyers for a man accused in a fatal hammer attack will decide in June whether to ask for a mental health evaluation in the case. Gerardo Perez is being held on $1.5 million bail. Police say the 19-year-old had been wandering the neighborhood just before the random attack, making noises that witnesses described as zombie-like. Authorities say 68-year-old victim Leslie Beus died after he was hit on the head Jan. 28.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah tribe's leader ousted from office for accepting improper gifts from the Washington Redskins says she plans to appeal. Gari Lafferty says she doesn't know exactly what form her appeal will take because it's the first such action since Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah adopted its constitution about 35 years ago. The council voted to remove Lafferty and set a special election for April 30.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A father says the city of Ogden is demanding that he remove the cardboard castle he built for his children. The Ogden Standard-Examiner reports that Jeremy Trentelman constructed the box fort, complete with a slide, in his front yard with his 3-year-old son. The code enforcement office says they were responding to an anonymous complaint.
