CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are taking the first step toward reworking a live entertainment tax that many complain is confusing and filled with too many exemptions. A presentation on the tax is scheduled for today in the Senate Revenue Committee. The tax generally applies to concerts, shows and sporting events but includes a lengthy list of events that are exempt.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — An 80-year-old Reno man has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault against a child under the age of 14. Washoe County deputies say Gerhart Maijala also faces two counts of lewdness with a child under 14. He's been held in jail without bail since his arrest on Wednesday. Deputies said the incidents involved one female victim who was known to the suspect.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The new fire chief to oversee firefighting on the Las Vegas Strip and in much of southern Nevada is a 25-year veteran of the Clark County Fire Department. The county has chosen Gregory Cassell to lead Nevada's largest fire department succeeding Bertral "Bert" Washington who left last year to lead the fire department in Pasadena, California.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The USDA has declared most of Nevada a natural disaster area due to lingering drought. Earlier this week the state water engineer ordered a 50 percent reduction in the amount of groundwater that can be pumped for crops in the Smith and Mason valleys north and east of Yerington.
