BEIRUT (AP) — There have been more U.S. airstrikes today in Syria and Iraq, targeting Islamic State militants. Officials say U.S. planes bombed a suspected Islamic State staging area in eastern Syria, and also hit militant positions across the border in neighboring Iraq. The attacks come a day after the U.S. and five Arab allies opened their military operation against the Islamic State group in Syria.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N.'s secretary-general is painting a grim picture of a world where there are "unspeakable acts and the deaths of innocents." Speaking to world leaders at the opening of the General Assembly session, Ban Ki-moon spoke of the turmoil in the Arab world, the return of Cold War tensions and the spread of disease. But he said leadership is about finding "the seeds of hope" amid the despair.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Protesters have returned to the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, with reports of smashed windows and possible arson overnight. The unrest came hours after a makeshift memorial for Michael Brown burned. The St. Louis suburb was the site of sometimes-violent protests and looting in the days after 18-year-old Brown was shot by a Ferguson police officer on Aug. 9.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening higher as the market shakes off three days of losses. Investors are weighing stronger Chinese manufacturing data against Europe's economic malaise. Bed Bath & Beyond rose 6 percent, after the home goods retailer reported earnings and revenue for its latest quarter that were better than Wall Street analysts were expecting.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Two of the three suburban Philadelphia defendants being charged in the beating of a gay couple during a late-night encounter on a Philadelphia street have turned themselves in to police. The case gained attention when police posted a video of the well-dressed suspects and online sleuths used social media sites to help identify them.
