MILWAUKEE (AP) — Saying "America deserves a raise," President Barack Obama has used a Labor Day appearance in blue-collar Milwaukee to renew his call for Congress to raise the minimum wage. In his speech, Obama also gave a pep talk to union members, seeking to define his Democratic Party as more sympathetic than Republicans to the needs of working men and women. He told his audience workers are better off than when he took office in 2009.
LONDON (AP) — The British government is taking steps aimed at keeping British citizens from going to fight alongside terror groups in the Middle East and then returning to carry out attacks back home. Prime Minister David Cameron is proposing a series of steps that are expected to win the approval of Parliament -- including a plan that would block suspected jihadi fighters from re-entering the country. Cameron says police at border crossings need more powers to act when they spot a suspect.
MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters in Miami say a tropical depression has formed off the Gulf coast of Mexico, with storm warnings issued from Tuxpan in the state of Veracruz north to La Pesca. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm is about 255 miles east-southeast of Tuxpan and is moving in a west-northwest direction at 13 miles per hour.
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea has put three detained Americans on display. Jeffrey Fowle, Matthew Miller and Kenneth Bae also said they believed the only solution to their situation is for a U.S. representative to come to North Korea to make a direct appeal.
CHICAGO (AP) — A new study has found that people snacked more while watching fast-paced, action-type adventures on television than while viewing a leisurely paced talk show. That's the upshot of work by Cornell University researchers who randomly assigned almost 100 undergraduates to watch one of three 20-minute sessions featuring "The Island," a sci-fi thriller, that same movie without the sound, or the "Charlie Rose" show.
