WASHINGTON (AP) — Another 300 troops will have to serve in Baghdad to protect the U.S. Embassy, U.S. citizens and property. The Pentagon says about 200 of them arrived during the past 48 hours. There are now about 750 U.S. troops in Iraq. A Pentagon spokesman says the extra manpower will enable the embassy "to continue its critical diplomatic mission." The State Department says a "small number" of staffers are being moved to areas of northern and southern Iraq not impacted by an advance of Sunni extremists.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Saying he can't "stand by and no nothing," President Barack Obama says he'll take executive actions to fix as much as he can with the immigration system. Speaking at the White House, Obama said House Republicans have engaged in a "year of obstruction." It's been almost a year since the Senate passed a historic immigration bill.
GEORGETOWN, Colo. (AP) — A plane crash about 55 miles west of Denver has killed three people. Authorities say the plane crashed into a slope of the Loveland Ski Area. Federal officials say the plane had taken off from an airport in suburban Denver and had been en route to Utah.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Police in Charlotte, North Carolina, say a motorist doesn't want to file charges against a man who assaulted her inside a store and then held on to her car as she drove on Interstate 77. A police spokesman says the man was not injured by the ride. Motorists who saw the man on the back of the car contacted police. One of them recorded a video of the ride.
DETROIT (AP) — Madonna is proving she's more than a 'Material Girl.' The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is donating money toward the construction of a new youth boxing gym and is buying iPods, iPads and other supplies for students at a charter school in Detroit, her hometown. According to a news release from her publicist, Madonna's donations to three Detroit organizations represent "the first phase of a long-term commitment to" the city.
