Republicans will pick nominees in hotly contested races for lieutenant governor and the 4th Congressional District and Democrats will choose between eight relative unknowns hoping to mount an unlikely campaign to unseat popular GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval. Election officials predict a light turnout at the polls today.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A report released Monday shows thousands of patients waited 30 days or more for care at the VA Medical Centers in Reno and North Las Vegas. The average wait time for new patients is about 50 days in Las Vegas and 53 days in Reno. The report is the first nationwide look at the VA system after reports of patients dying while awaiting appointments at the Phoenix VA center.

KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — The husband of a couple who killed two police officers in a Las Vegas strip mall ambush Sunday racked up several convictions in Washington state more than a decade ago. According to the Washington State Patrol, Jerad Miller was convicted of one felony — stealing a vehicle — and several other offenses between 2001 and 2003.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — President Barack Obama is encouraging Western governors to support a plan to budget for fighting wildfires, instead of raiding funding for mitigation efforts. Proposals pending in Congress would create an emergency fund to fight wildfires. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says that fighting wildfires this year will cost about $1.8 billion.
