House panel to probe Bergdahl deal...Appointments, disappointments...Sao Paulo subway strike suspended

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Armed Services Committee will investigate the Obama administration's swap of an American prisoner held in Afghanistan for five years for five Taliban leaders. Obama administration officials defended the deal that freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl during a tense 90-minute, closed-door briefing for House Democrats and Republicans.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new report shows how deep the problems are in the Veterans Administration network. The government says more than 57,000 U.S. military veterans have been waiting 90 days or more for their first VA medical appointments. An additional 64,000 apparently never got appointments after enrolling.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors in California have identified the man suspected of leading police on a freeway chase, then barricading himself in a San Fernando Valley home for several hours. A felony complaint says 41-year-old Nolan Perez is charged with seven felony counts, including stalking and criminal threats against a woman believed to be his ex-girlfriend.

ZEBULON, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man has been charged with human trafficking. Police say he was holding a German woman against her will in a secret room at a suburban Raleigh warehouse.

SAO PAULO (AP) — In Sao Paulo, Brazil, leaders of striking subway workers have announced the union is suspending a work stoppage for two days. The strike has thrown traffic into chaos before the city hosts the World Cup's opening game this week.
