But Clinton, speaking at an event in Denver, said U.S. allies often make such deals. Republicans have referred to the exchange as dealing with terrorists.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has left Washington for a four-day trip to Poland, Belgium and France. He's expected to urge European leaders to keep up pressure on Russia over its threatening moves in Ukraine. Obama will also attend a meeting of the Group of Seven major industrial nations that was quickly arranged after leaders decided to boycott a meeting Russia had been scheduled to host this week.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrian opposition and government critics call it a sham, but polling stations have opened in Syria's presidential election. President Bashar Assad is widely expected to win. The vote comes amid a three-year civil war that activists say has killed more than 160,000 people.

BEIJING (AP) — Security has been ramped up in Beijing on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the crushing of pro-democracy protests centered on the capital's Tiananmen Square. There are police checkpoints and troops are patrolling overpasses and streets surrounding the square. Dozens of activists and government critics have been detained.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The owner and the chief operating officer of an Iowa company face a multi-million dollar fine and possible jail time for selling old eggs and tainted products that caused a 2010 salmonella outbreak. The Quality Egg officials are expected to plead guilty to charges of bribing a federal food inspector to sell poor quality, misbranded eggs. Jack and Peter DeCoster have agreed to pay a $6.8 million fine and could face up to one year in jail.
