SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has hired Congressman Jason Chaffetz's chief of staff to serve in the same role for the governor. Herbert's office says Justin Harding replaces Derek Miller, who stepped down last month to serve as the new president and CEO of World Trade Center Utah.
OREM, Utah (AP) — Orem police say a man suspected of driving impaired crashed into the vehicle of the agency's one officer whose sole job is to spot alcohol violations. Police say Eric Hidalgo had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol when he was arrested Sunday. The officer wasn't hurt but his car was damaged.
ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A former Washington County deputy charged with drunken driving has pleaded not guilty in the case after a judge ordered him to stand trial. Jason Adams is charged with misdemeanor counts of DUI and failure to operate in a single lane. He was placed on leave in February after he crashed his unmarked pickup truck on State Highway 17 near LaVerkin.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Provo fire officials say cottonwood seeds that lazily travel through the air helped fuel two small fires over the weekend. Deputy Fire Chief Tom Augustus says the balls of white fluff are almost as volatile as gasoline. Augustus says the seeds can build up in window wells and become flash fires when sparks hit.
