BLAHODATNE, Ukraine (AP) — Three days before Ukraine holds presidential elections, pro-Russia insurgents have carried out their deadliest raid yet on government troops. It happened at a military checkpoint about 20 miles south of Donetsk. Residents say the rebels jumped out of an armored bank truck and opened fire, killing 16 soldiers. Fighting has also been reported in at least two other villages today.

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) — Senior Egyptian security officials say the top leader of an al-Qaida-inspired group in Egypt's Sinai has been killed along with three other militants in a drive-by shooting. The development is a heavy blow to the militant group, which has claimed scores of deadly attacks across Egypt since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi last July. Egypt holds presidential elections next week.

KACHINA VILLAGE, Ariz. (AP) — Containment is zero on Arizona's Slide Fire. It's burned 7.5 square miles in and around Oak Creek Canyon, a scenic recreation area along a highway between Sedona and Flagstaff. There have been no reports so far of injuries or structures burned, but fire officials say the blaze is about 3 miles away from the residential areas of Forest Highlands and Kachina Village, where 3,200 residents remain under pre-evacuation warnings. With smoke billowing over homes, many residents have already cleared out.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office in Washington state says another body has been recovered from the debris of a landslide that killed dozens of people in the community of Oso (OH'-soh) in March. Authorities ended the active search for bodies late last month, but work continues to rebuild a highway through the area. Two people remain listed as missing.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors has recalled 13.8 million cars and trucks in the U.S. since the start of the year, but that's not likely to be the end of it. GM is telling Wall Street analysts that its ongoing review of safety issues will probably result in recalls into mid-summer. The company says it intends to recall cars as soon as an issue is discovered.
