BANGKOK (AP) — The military has officially taken over in Thailand after six months of political deadlock. Thailand's army chief announced the coup today, saying it's necessary to restore stability and order. The decision follows two days of fruitless, army-mediated meetings between the country's rival political leaders.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The safety and security of nuclear weapons under military control comes into play in a review of a failed drill last summer that simulated the hostile takeover of a missile launch silo. Armed security forces at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana were unable to quickly regain control of the captured weapon. The internal Air Force review was obtained by The Associated Press.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a girl 10 years ago got false identification papers for her from Mexico. The girl was 15 when she disappeared from Santa Ana in 2004. Police say 41-year-old Isidro Garcia forced the victim into marriage, fathered a child with her and used physical and emotional abuse to prevent her from fleeing. Garcia is expected in court today.

BLAHODATNE, Ukraine (AP) — An attack in eastern Ukraine just days before the country's presidential election has left at least 11 Ukrainian troops dead and 30 wounded. Pro-Russian insurgents attacked a military checkpoint in the deadliest raid in weeks of fighting. AP journalists saw 11 bodies scattered around the checkpoint.

WASHINGTON (AP) —President Barack Obama plans to discuss the economic benefits of tourism today and the latest steps he is taking to promote it. He's supporting new steps to make it easier for people from other countries to visit the U.S. and spend money at hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and other businesses. He'll make his pitch during a visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
