WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration sees the latest demonstrations in eastern Ukraine as a "contrived pretext" for Russian military intervention there. Secretary of State John Kerry today warned that Russia will face tougher economic sanctions if it doesn't back down from its involvement there. Pro-Russian demonstrators are said to be holding dozens of hostages in a government building in eastern Ukraine.
WASHINGTON (AP) — It was Theodore Roosevelt who said the U.S. foreign policy should be to "speak softly and carry a big stick." But Republican Sen. John McCain says the Obama administration is carrying a "twig" instead, in its dealings with the rest of the world. He and other senators used today's appearance by Secretary of State John Kerry before the Foreign Relations Committee to criticize the administration's response on Russia, nuclear talks with Iran and the Syrian civil war. Kerry dismissed arguments that his Mideast peace effort is hopeless, and that the U.S. has been ineffective in ending the war in Syria.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Regulators are taking steps today to require U.S. banks to build a stronger financial base -- so that there's less of a risk they could collapse and cause a global meltdown. The eight biggest U.S. banks will have to meet stricter requirements for holding capital, under a rule being adopted by regulators. The banks include Citigroup, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. The rules don't take effect until 2018.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police have found weapons and ammunition in the car and the home of a man accused of opening fire with a handgun inside a Los Angeles police station last night, hitting one officer several times before being wounded by return fire. They say they don't know why the suspect brought only a Glock pistol into the station, leaving an AK-47 behind in the car. The officer who was hit is hospitalized in good condition. The suspect is in critical condition.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The battle over whether college athletes can unionize may still just be in the first quarter. Northwestern University is facing a Wednesday deadline to ask the National Labor Relations Board to review a decision that classified football players as employees of the university. The decision opened the door for players to let a union represent them. Many legal experts believe the case could ultimately wind up before the Supreme Court -- and it could take years to get there. Meanwhile, the football team has a vote scheduled later this month on whether to let a union bargain for better health insurance, scholarships and other benefits.
