This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Here's something to think about: the technology sector in Utah represents almost 25 percent of Utah's GDP. High-tech companies bring in close to $20 billion in revenues, which in turn helps keep Utah business strong. And a huge supporter of companies in this sector is the Wayne Brown Institute, based in Salt Lake City.
For over 30 years, the Wayne Brown Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been a premier resource for both entrepreneurs seeking funding and for investors who want to help promising young companies achieve their potential. It has become one of the most efficient and cost effective economic development organizations in the country.
It's named after the late Wayne Brown, who was a professor of engineering and dean of the school of engineering at the U of U. The institute has carried on his spirit, vision and forward thinking. Wayne founded Research Park and helped start the development surrounding that area. He also launched and sold several highly successful companies throughout his working life before he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1988. But the tone he set has been the call for those who love high tech and what the industry can produce.
At Wayne Brown Institute, their focus is on angel, venture capital and venture debt, which is a specialized form of lending. Their goal is to help early stage tech companies get financing. Many learn about WBI by coming to one of their events held throughout the year. They offer Deal Forms designed to help early stage tech companies get financing.
Wayne Brown Institute offers a team of highly professional CEOs and investment groups plus people in other industries who can coach business owners. This helps startup businesses refine and prepare a pitch for potential investors. By the time it's completed, they have an impressive presentation about their company, which has been through several levels of refinement.
And while some entrepreneurs may not have had the opportunity to interact with outside investors much, Wayne Brown Institute helps them prepare to reach an investor base.
