SALT LAKE CITY — The House voted 41-28 late Thursday night to pass a bill restricting cellphone use while driving.
SB253, sponsored by Sen. Steve Urquhart, R-St. George, was passed by the Senate 17-8 earlier this week and will now go to the governor for his consideration.
Current state law prohibits Utah drivers from texting but doesn't specify whether they can use phones or electronic devices for other purposes.
The bill would add to the list of restricted activities dialing a number, using the Internet to send email or any other purpose, as well as watching and recording video. However, it would still allow use of a phone or handheld device for navigation and global positioning services.
