SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Attorneys for the same-sex couples say Utah's ban on gay marriages demeans and stigmatizes gay and lesbian couples. The opening brief filed earlier this month by Utah state attorneys argued the 2004 ban should stand because the optimal environment for raising children is with a mother and father. A hearing is scheduled April 10.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Four University of Utah students could face disciplinary measures after a campus security guard says they were smoking marijuana in an igloo. Authorities say the well-camouflaged hideaway was discovered by a passing guard Jan. 31 in the woods between campus housing and Research Park. All were referred to campus officials.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah school district criticized for taking away $2 school lunches from students whose accounts were overdue has pulled back on a plan to hire a public relations firm. Some parents criticized the quest for a PR firm as wasteful. The Salt Lake City School District Board president emailed fellow board members to say moving forward with a firm was not recommended.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A group pushing Utah to adopt a primary election system for nominating political candidates says they're close to gathering the required number of signatures to put the issue to voters. The Count My Vote organization said they've collected more than 100,000 signatures for their ballot initiative. They will need more than 102,000 signatures by April 15.
