(KSL News) October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Today people gathered at St. Marks Hospital to learn about the disease and hang pink ribbons to honor of those who have had the cancer.

Although breast cancer affects many women, it's something that can often be treated if caught early. Sandy Osmond with Women's Services at St. Marks Hospital, said, "It is so important that they see their health care provider once a year. This is the way they can save their own lives."

Organizers say 1,200 Utah women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 240 will lose their lives.
