LOS ANGELES, Sep 13, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- "Empire Rising" author Thomas Kelly is working on police dramas for CBS and HBO.

Kelly is developing "Night Watch" for HBO about six officers who cover a quadrant of New York between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., the Hollywood Reporter said.

Kelly's CBS script, "One Police Plaza, was pitched as a "West Wing" with cops, the Reporter said.

Kelly said he was excited about his move into TV.

"As a novelist, primarily you're a storyteller," Kelly said. "And right now, the great storytelling is in TV. A TV show is like a novel -- you're given a big canvas in which to tell a story."

In addition to "Empire Rising," Kelly's other works included "Payback" and "The Rackets." He said he is starting a novel about "rise and fall of post-World War II New York."
