Shelley Osterloh ReportingCampers may have to search a little harder for an open campsite this holiday weekend. Flooding has closed some popular campgrounds in the Northeast part of the state.
In the Vernal Ranger district of Ashley National Forest, there are no campgrounds open. The largest, called Whiterocks, closed just today due to flooding. In the Duchesne Roosevelt district of Ashley all campgrounds in Yellowstone area near the Uintas are closed, that's near Moon Lake (NOTE: The Moon Lake Campground is OPEN. Yellowstone National Park is OPEN.). In the Uintah Canyon area, The Wandin and Aspen campgrounds are also closed.
Flooding has not affected any campgrounds in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation area; they remain open. But elsewhere in the state you may find some upper elevation campgrounds still closed because of snow.
There are campgrounds open at lower elevations, like one called the Willows, but if you have small kids you are going to want to be careful camping so close to fast moving water.
Utah state Parks says most of its camping areas are open. Your best bets right now might be Bear Lake, Starvation and the Rock Cliffs at Jordanelle. If possible, you may want to call ahead to find out if your favorite spot is open for camping.
If you are thinking about camping in any of Utah's National Forest areas, it is recommended you call first.
