The most recent time was 2022, when Jansen was with the Atlanta Braves. It also happened in 2012 and '18 when he pitched for the Dodgers.

Ohtani hits 473-foot homer that clears bleachers at Dodger Stadium

07/21/2024 7:39pm
Shohei Ohtani made his 30th home run in Dodger blue a memorable one. The superstar slugger drove a cutter from Boston pitcher Kutter Crawford 473 feet over the bleachers at Dodger Stadium during the fifth inning of Sunday's game against the Red Sox. According to fans in the area, the ball sailed between the pavilion roof and an advertisement sign in right-center field, but it cleared the concourse and landed on the walkway in the ballpark plaza. Ohtani just missed becoming the second Dodgers player and sixth overall to clear the pavilion roof and hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962. Los Angeles slugger Mike Piazza did it on Sept. 21, 1997, against the Colorado Rockies.

Ron Washington gifted ball by Kevin Pillar from the final out of the Angels' final Coliseum visit

07/21/2024 7:17pm
Kevin Pillar made sure manager Ron Washington received the ball after making the final out in center field. It would certainly be a meaningful souvenir from the Los Angeles Angels' last scheduled visit to Oakland. And Pillar knew he had to gift it to Washington, the longtime Athletics' third base and infield coach who still feels so fondly about the franchise and city. Washington's club rallied to beat the A's 8-5 at the Coliseum, where Oakland is playing its final season before at least three years scheduled for Sacramento ahead of a planned move to Las Vegas in 2028.

Giants manager Bob Melvin ejected before 1st pitch of game at Colorado

07/21/2024 6:36pm
San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin wasn't around for the finish Sunday as his team defeated the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. He didn't even make it to the start, for that matter. In an unusual scene, Melvin was ejected before the first pitch after he and bench coach Ryan Christensen delivered the lineup card to home plate umpire Alex MacKay. Following the Giants' 3-2 victory, Melvin said he just "talked too much" and his ejection wasn't planned or choreographed. He said "umpiring's a hard job" and he "probably went too far." San Francisco was coming off a 4-3 loss to the Rockies on Saturday night and a 7-3 loss on Friday.

Following their 6-2 defeat, the Braves announced X-rays revealed a left wrist fracture and Albies is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks. Albies is hitting .255 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs, almost exclusively from the No. 2 spot in the batting order. The pregame comments were the first time Yamamoto has met with the media since he went on the IL on June 16 with a strained rotator cuff. The injury was initially described as triceps tightness before the strain was diagnosed. Yamamoto said he isn't feeling any pain or discomfort in his shoulder. He will play catch on Monday and stretch it out close to 200 feet. If that goes well, manager Dave Roberts is hopeful Yamamoto could resume his throwing program.

Shooting the race is as much about finding a unique angle that captures the scenic and quirky side of one of the world's most epic competitions as getting stage winners crossing the line with arms raised in victory. It's also an endurance contest. Long days are spent snapping photos from the back of a motorcycle, or speeding ahead to find a vantage point and then racing to catch the riders.

Hitless in 17 at-bats, LeMahieu was out of the New York Yankees' starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Fans booed him in recent days. A three-time All-Star, LeMahieu turned 36 on July 13. 07/21/2024 11:24am
Xander Schauffele was the player who couldn't win a major at the start of the year. Now he has two of them. The 30-year-old Californian won the British Open with a masterpiece at Royal Troon. He played bogey-free for a 65 to get his name on the base of that silver claret jug. Schauffele won the PGA Championship in May at Valhalla. He's the first player since 2015 to win his first two majors in the same season. And his victory at Royal Troon gave the Americans a sweep of the four majors for the first time since 1982. Schauffele's 65 ranks among the great closing rounds in British Open history.

With AI, jets and police squadrons, Paris is securing the Olympics — and worrying critics

07/21/2024 10:21am
The head of the Paris Olympics boldly declared that France's capital would be "the safest place in the world" when the Games open. Tony Estanguet's confident forecast, delivered a year ago, looks less far-fetched ahead of the opening ceremony Friday. Squadrons of police are patrolling Paris streets and fighter jets and soldiers are ready to scramble. An imposing metal-fenced security cordon has been erected like an iron curtain on both sides of the River Seine that will star in the opening show. France's vast police and military operation is largely because the July 26-Aug. 11 Games face unprecedented challenges. The city has repeatedly suffered bloody extremist attacks and international tensions are high because of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The wake-up call for the US men's basketball team arrives with the Paris Olympics a few days away

07/21/2024 10:18am
South Sudan is the 33rd-ranked team in the FIBA world rankings, by far the lowest of any of the 12 nations that will be vying for men's basketball gold in the Paris Olympics that start this week. The U.S. is ranked No. 1. Yet South Sudan nearly beat the Americans anyway. The every-four-years wake-up call for the U.S. Olympic team seems to have arrived. The Americans lost two exhibitions on the way to Tokyo in 2021 and then lost to France to open those Games before rallying to win gold at the end. They are going for their fifth straight gold.

Fried has made 18 starts this season and has been a critical member of the Braves' rotation along with Chris Sale and Reynaldo López. Manager Brian Snitker said Fried initially felt something getting loose before Tuesday's All-Star Game. Fried pitched the second inning, throwing 10 pitches and allowing one walk. He still felt something was off when he came to the ballpark on Friday, and he had an MRI that revealed the neuritis. He will not throw until he is asymptomatic.

Lewis Hamilton finished third behind the papaya-colored pair for his 200th career podium. Points leader Max Verstappen finished fifth and has now gone three races without a victory.

07/21/2024 7:02am
Pope Francis has voiced his hope that the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide an opportunity for countries at war to respect an ancient Greek tradition and establish a truce for the duration of the Games. During his Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square, Francis said that "according to ancient tradition, may the Olympics be an opportunity to establish a truce in wars, demonstrating a sincere will for peace." The pope stressed that sport also has "a great social power, capable of peacefully uniting people from different cultures." Biles says the Landis have served as important mentors to her over the years, both in the gym and in life. The Landis say the key to their coaching success is making it a point to adjust to each athlete rather than the more rigid style they grew up with in France. The Landis are moving on after the Olympics. Cecile Landi was named co-head coach at the University of Georgia in April.

US women's Olympic basketball knows it has work to do after loss to WNBA team

07/21/2024 4:00am
There is no panic in the U.S. women's Olympic team. The Americans have been in this spot before. The U.S. lost to the WNBA All-Star team on Saturday night and are headed on a flight to London to continue their prep for the Paris Olympics. Breanna Stewart said it felt like deja vu and she wasn't wrong. The 2021 Olympic team also lost to the WNBA All-Star team in a tune-up to the Tokyo Games. They went on to cruise to a seventh consecutive gold medal in Tokyo that year. Just like in the 2021 exhibition game, the Americans had no answer for Arike Ogunbowale.
