HIGHLAND — Residents took turns telling elected officials why they should vote against a proposed $900,000 property tax increase Tuesday night, but it didn't matter.
Just before midnight, the Highland City Council voted 3-2 to approve the 2012-13 fiscal-year budget, including the tax increase for road projects.
Craig Peeples, a 10-year Highland resident, was among those who spoke against the tax hike. The U.S. is having to cut back, Peeples said, and so should Highland.
The property tax, as included in the budget, calls for $700,000 to go toward road construction and another $200,000 for road maintenance.
The city will hold a truth-in-taxation hearing in August.
