BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has named a Samford University professor as the 2014 Alabama professor of the year.

University officials say geography professor Eric Fournier was recognized Thursday at the U.S. Professors of the Year awards ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington Thursday.

The program honors outstanding undergraduate professors throughout the country.

University officials say Fournier has been a faculty member since 1997 and has served as chair of the school's geography department for 12 years. Officials say Fournier has also taught at the University of Georgia, where he earned a Ph.D., and at Kennesaw State University.
