HOUMA, La. (AP) — As part of a partnership with PetSmart Charities, the Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter received a $33,000 grant to pay for a new veterinary technician position.
Shelter Manager Valerie Robinson tells The Courier (http://bit.ly/1nWWeXv ) veterinary technicians are similar to nurses in hospitals. Robinson says they provide support for veterinarians during surgery, run tests on animals and administer medications among other care-taking tasks.
Robinson says the grant will cover the majority of the first year's salary to establish the technician position. The position will then be folded into the shelter's budget.
The grant is part of an ongoing effort to alleviate overcrowding in local animal shelters and to cut down the number of animals that are killed.
