A popular downtown restaurant is shut down after police discover more than food was being served there. Drug agents busted the BC Chicken, on 300 South and State Street, this morning, just before the lunch time rush.
Police served a search warrant there after they found out people could buy drugs with their dinner. They recovered cash and what they believe is heroine and cocaine. Investigators say the large amount of drugs recovered indicates they were being sold inside the restaurant.
Police say an anonymous tip sparked the investigation and undercover agents were able to buy drugs there twice in the past week. People who work in nearby businesses saw officers go in to the restaurant this morning with their guns drawn.
Perry Knuth, Works Next Door: "Bunch of guys with masks lined up there with police on it. They just ran to the corner and hollered, 'police, police'. My stomach went up into my chest. Scary."
Police arrested one person, who used a jacket to cover his head. They identified him as 29-year old Mahbod Fari.
People who work in the area and frequent customers tell us Fari is the owner of BC Chicken. They defended him, saying he's a nice guy who worked hard and always gave food to the needy.
Fari is now in the Salt Lake County Jail on multiple drug charges. The Health Department shut the restaurant down because the owner did not have a health permit. They say the place will stay closed until the owner applies for one and an inspection is done.
