PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A Provo mother could face serious charges in connection with the violent shaking of her newborn son.

Authorities say the 23-year-old woman originally told doctors her six-week-old son fell off the bed. However, when doctors found injuries consistent with the baby being shaken, police say the woman changed her story.

According to a police report, the woman told officers she shook her baby in an attempt to make him stop crying. She told officers she was in pain and got frustrated with the child.

Police say the baby suffered some brain damage, but seems to be doing OK now. The child is now staying with family members.

The woman has been arrested and booked into jail for investigation of aggravated child abuse.
