(KSL News) -- Red flags fill an area of the University of Utah campus, but they don't represent school spirit.

The flags represent the more than 3,000 people helped by the Rape Recovery Center in Salt Lake this year. Students hope a visual representation of that statistic will help people understand how big of a problem sexual assault really is.

Heather Meyer, Peers Educating to End Rape: "Society kind of shelters this and hides it a little bit. So we want to raise awareness, but also kind of talk to people about how to get involved and how to change this."

Organizers say awareness is crucial, especially because more than 90 percent of victims are attacked by people they know.

The flags will be on display through the end of the week.
