Sam Penrod reportingA 13-year old girl jumped behind the wheel of her grandparents' truck this afternoon, and before she knew it she had all kinds of police hot on her tail.

The girl is from Salem, and was living with her grandparents. Earlier today, she was expelled from school. She went home and stole a pickup truck belonging to her grandparents.

Police near Lehi saw the stolen truck on the freeway and started chasing her. At the Point of the Mountain the chase was called off out of safety concerns.

A few minutes later police got a call about a crash at the 106th off ramp.

Trooper Daniel Brooks, Utah Highway Patrol: "Crashed at the scene, fled on foot and a citizen was reporting her position to us, and pretty much guided us right in and we were able to pick her up without any incident. We drove up and she didn't continue to run, put her hands down to her side and we took her into custody there."

The crash involved a van. No one was hurt.

But if the girl though she was in trouble at school, troopers say she is in big trouble now. She is facing criminal charges of vehicle theft, felony evading, hit and run and of course, driving without a license. She's been booked into juvenile detention.

Troopers say a driver this young is rare. Overall, they are just relieved that no one was hurt, considering the in-experience of the driver, as well as and how fast she was driving.
