Parents Encouraged to Get Kids More Active

Samantha Hayes ReportingParents with children returning to school this year have two conflicting interests. One is driving their children to school to keep them safe. The other is a push to have them walk to school so we can reduce child obesity.

The American College of Sports medicine wants parents to consider allowing their children to walk to school or ride a bike as a way to up physical activity. But this report is coming at time when many parents are worried about letting their children be out of sight for even a moment.

You may have heard your parents talk about how they used to get to school--walking both ways up hill, maybe even in the snow. It was supposed to make you feel thankful for a lift, either in the car or on the bus. Well now walking to school is a recommendation for many kids who may struggle with obesity.

The American College of Sports Medicine says walking, biking, or skating to school has a significant impact on kids' physical activity levels. It's a nice idea and maybe practical for some families, but many parents feel that's unsafe.

Connie Barnhurst, Parent: "No matter how much you teach them stranger danger, they find a way and talk them into their vehicles."

Ranae Monsen, Parent: "There are too many streets, in my opinion, that are dangerous for kids."

Still, doctors say parents need to find or make time for kids to exercise.

Dr. Matthew Anderson: "All a kid needs to do is burn 50 more calories a day, that's five pounds a year or 100 calories in a day; that's 10 pounds a year."

If walking to school is out of the question, family activities that may normally center around the television should change.

Dr. Matthew Anderson: "Just going on a walk with the family twice a week or going on a hike instead of going out to a movie, it can make the biggest difference."

The American College of Sports Medicine believes walking to school is also a way to get kids active without exercise being competitive.
