Sandra Yi Reporting The Bountiful teenager accused of killing his mother and stuffing her body in a freezer made his first court appearance in Montana. Jeremy Hauck is charged with murder and vehicle theft.
This was his first court appearance so it was very quick. Jeremy Hauck did waive extradition, so he's expected to be back in Utah, sometime next week.
The teen appeared in court via closed circuit television from the Missoula County Detention Center. He stood next to his attorney. He was very calm. Family members, some from Utah, packed the courtroom. They say Laura Hauck was a good mother, but they describe Jeremy as a mystery.
Police believe Jeremy shot his mother twice and slit her throat. The arrest warrant reveals he tried to cover up the crime. An affidavit filed with the warrant says newspaper was spread out over a pool of blood on the victim's bed and over a trail of blood that led to the freezer, in an apparent attempt to soak it up. Police also found a bloody towel and shirt in Jeremy's room and blood residue in the bathroom sink.
Police believe Laura was killed Friday night or early Saturday morning. Police say Hauck stayed at a Layton hotel that weekend. On Wednesday night, investigators caught up to Jeremy at a motel in Missoula, Montana, where he had checked in under his own name.
Police are now saying Hauck had multiple weapons with him at the Missoula motel, including a 12-gauge shotgun, a 22-caliber firearm, and an assault rifle with 30 magazine clips.
Hauck is being held in Montana, on 300 thousand dollars bond. Montana police will drop the car theft charge against Jeremy when he's in the custody of Utah authorities.
