LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- The 11 candidates for Logan's police chief all are current members of the department or formerly worked for it and now hold some other job with the city.
The candidates are three police captains, two retired captains and six lieutenants.
Watts said that as of Tuesday, he'd interviewed about half of the candidates, and he hopes to be done with interviews by the end of this week. He may then call some back for a second interview.
"We're only a couple of weeks from announcing (the new chief)," Watts said.
The men are Capts. Eric Collins, Russ Roper and Dave Tarbet; Retired Capts. Randy Auman and James Geier; and Lts. Jeff Curtis, Brad Franke, Tracy Hulse, Bryan Low, Rod Peterson and Richard Salvesen.
Watts said last week that he wanted to find the replacement for outgoing Chief Richard Hendricks from within the agency to continue many of the policing efforts the department has used for years.
However, he said that he received interest from outside Logan after Hendricks announced his plans to resign last week.
"There are a few others that have been with the department that have moved on for other jobs," Watts said. "I've appreciated their calls, but I'm keeping at (these 11 candidates) at this time."
Watts said the final decision is his and does not need approval from the Municipal Council.
Geier retired from the department last year after 25 years with the police force, and he now works in the city's community development office.
Auman also retired last year and last served as captain of the department's 911 dispatch center. His retirement coincided with a decision to make the director of the dispatch center a civilian position, and Auman was rehired by the city to fill that job.
Collins is the captain of the investigations division, and Peterson is a lieutenant in that division.
Roper is captain of the patrol division. Hulse and Curtis are lieutenants in the patrol division.
Tarbet is captain of the special operations division. Salvesen is a lieutenant in that department.
Franke is a lieutenant in the office of the police chief.
Low is the lieutenant over the department's communications division.
