(KSL News) Emergency crews rushed a 14-year-old girl to the hospital, with critical head injuries. She crashed her motorized scooter overnight.

She and her sister were riding down the sidewalk near 600 West, 650 North. The girls lost control and were thrown onto the street.

Neither girl was wearing a helmet.

The 17-year-old is okay, but her younger sister was seriously hurt.

Lt. Sandra Urry, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "We really encourage anyone on bicycles, skateboards, anything like that to put on the safety equipment, especially helmets."

Officials aren't sure how the accident happened, but they say it was very dark outside and the girls likely didn't see rocks on the sidewalk.
