VERNAL, Utah (AP) -- West Nile Virus has been detected in Duchesne County.

The TriCounty Health Department says the virus was found in a sentinel chicken last week from a flock in the county.

Health officials say West Nile has been detected about three to four weeks earlier this year than last.

Officials say because of the earlier detection, residents should begin taking precautions. They include using repellent containing DEET and wearing long sleeves and pants whenever possible.

West Nile is transmitted to both humans and horses by mosquitoes.
