Sandra Yi ReportingJames Lofgreen: "It makes me feel like my neighborhood isn't safe, and I don't like it at all."
Police are investigating an overnight shooting that left one person dead. Two others, including a 10-year old boy, were hurt. It happened around 2:30 this morning in the area of 1800 West and 400 North, in Salt Lake City.
Police are still investigating. They say, possibly hundreds of people were here last night for a party. A fight erupted. In the end, an 18-year old was shot and killed in the driveway.
James Lofgreen, Neighbor: "It was a lot of commotion. They were having a big party over here."
But the gathering ended in violence. One neighbor, who was too scared to talk on camera, says a group of girls began arguing. He says they left, then came back to the neighborhood with more people. A fight started. When some men got in the middle of it, gunshots rang out.
James Lofgreen: "It sounded like fireworks, like really, really loud fireworks."
Det. Joe Cyr, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "There may have been dozens of shots fired. At this point, we have 22 calibers, have 9 millimeter shell casings throughout the scene."
An 18-year old man was killed. A 21-year old man was shot in the arm, and a 10-year old boy was grazed with a bullet.
Family members were emotional.
Police say people began to scatter. A police dog caught one person, who was seen tossing a gun.
James Lofgreen: "It's ridiculous. They need to watch what they do around children."
Hours later, police arrested a 17-year old who was found hiding on the roof of a nearby home. He had been up there for five hours; police used a fire ladder to get him down.
Officers say he had a gun with him. Police say the shooting may have been gang related.
In a neighborhood with so many children, residents are scared and upset.
James Lofgreen: "I wasn't expecting it. It's supposed to be a holiday, family, and there's children out here getting shot. It's not right."
Police have not released the name of the shooting victims. They have one teen in custody for aggravated assault, another on weapons charges.
They are still investigating and expect more arrests.
