SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Kolob fire in southwestern Utah grew to 4,800 acres on Sunday and a finger of the blaze reached Utah 9, forcing closure of the highway between Virgin and Rockville.
Two hotshot crews were working on the fire at that spot late Sunday and hoped to get the highway reopened, said fire information officer Anne Stanworth.
She said there were a total of 300 firefighters on the blaze, which had been 3 percent contained. They were aided by 22 engines, two helicopters and seven air tankers.
The blaze was burning on private, Bureau of Land Management and Zion National Park lands.
It burned on both sides of the Kolob Terrace road and all trails accessible to the park's backcountry from the road were closed.
Four storage sheds were burned Saturday night.
A single 12-member squad of firefighters was on the Jarvis fire, which had burned 4,000 acres about 10 miles southwest of St. George and east of U.S. 91. Air resources were being shared between it and the Kolob fire. It was about 5 percent contained by late Sunday.
