OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A man who was in a standoff with police Saturday shot himself and a woman sitting next to him was injured by a bone fragment that hit her in the neck, police said.

Police were investigating a call that Autumn Lee, 30, of South Ogden had been taken from a women's shelter by her ex-boyfriend, whom she had a protective order against.

Lee was driving and Ryan Todd Oman, 21, of Ogden, was in the passenger seat with a handgun when police pulled the car over in a parking lot around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Lee told police she wasn't being held hostage, but was worried if she got out Oman would shoot himself.

Oman opened the passenger door to talk to officers, but would not put down the gun.

"The negotiator continued to try to talk to him and while she was on the line with him he shot himself," assistant police chief Randy Watt said. "There was one gunshot fired. It appears that the round passed through him and into her."

Doctors at McKay-Dee Hospital determined that Lee was struck in the neck by a piece of bone, not the bullet.

Oman died around 6 p.m. Lee was listed in good condition.

Police had been looking for Oman for a shooting on June 13.
