(KSL News) -- Troopers were on alert when a bus with a smoking engine didn't pull over.
Josh Adkins / Bus Passenger: "We were just relaxing having a good time. Next thing you know the bus started slowing up. Everybody was looking out the window wondering why were going so slow. Then we heard a pop, smoke was going everywhere."
The Greyhound bus was westbound on I-80. Troopers followed him off the freeway at 900 South.
Josh Adkins / Bus Passenger: "After a while the police rode up and got him to pull over. But that was almost 20 minutes after smoke started engulfing the inside of the bus."
Oil trapped in the exhaust pipe caused the smoke and a small fire. The driver says he knew there was a problem, but didn't want to pull off on the freeway because of passenger safety.
Matt Morgan/ Utah Highway Patrol: "The bus driver was aware of it. It was heavy smoke. I couldn't see anything. Almost a white-out of smoke. It could have been a lot worse with other accidents because of the visibility that wasn't there."
No one was injured.
The passengers evacuated and had their luggage switched to another bus.
A Utah Highway Patrol troopers saw a bus heading down the freeway with smoke coming from its engine.
The Greyhound bus heading west on I-80 near 900 S. West Temple, when troopers spotted him. They were concerned because the driver didn't pull over right away.
The driver says he knew something was wrong, but didn't want to pull over on the freeway for the safety of the passengers.
Oil enclosed in the exhaust pipe caused the smoke and a small fire. A replacement bus was brought in and passengers went on their way.
