(KSL News) -- A Utah National Guardsman working along the Mexican border was once an illegal immigrant too.

Wilmer Valladares, a native of Honduras, jumped the border ten years ago this week. Now he's been called to help reinforce a fence to keep illegal immigrants out.

Wilmer Valladares, Utah National Guard: "I had a reason to come; the reason was to feed my family. The wall or anything in my way wouldn't stop me."

Valladares is now a US citizen. He says building the fence makes him part of history and helps secure America's future.
