Marc Giauque Reporting Ever heard of the Union of Concerned Scientists? Maybe not, but the group looked at school buses nationwide and ranked Utah among the worst, at least when it comes to pollution.

The group gave Utah a D-, the lowest grade possible.

About 2300 busses in Utah put on the miles at this time of year. But the Union of Concerned Scientists, a non-profit research group, says people might be surprised by just how much soot and other pollutants many of those busses put into the air. In some cases Busses put on 150 percent more per mile than the average semi-truck.

The group says Utah's fleet is old and out-dated. It's calling on districts to retrofit older buses with soot-traps and to invest in new buses with cleaner burning fuels.
